Free Internet WiFi Network

Free wireless internet access: an initiative of the Municipality of Trikala, implemented in October 2005, providing FREE wireless internet access to every citizen. Nowadays, there are 15 nodes operating (we are planning to increase them into 21) of which 5 are operating through the fiber optic network, 4 are Wi-Max and the rest 6 are Wi-Fi. With the use of free wireless internet, the citizens enjoy fast and symmetrical internet connections and at the same time they get educated by using technology and by accessing all kind of information. The procedure of connecting with the municipal wi-fi network is simple as long as the citizen visits our office and fill in the relative form in order to acquire his/her personal username and password. Consequently, FREE access to the internet is provided to households and businesses or visitors.

Do you want to be connected to the city's wi-Fi ? Here is the equipment you may need.

1st solution

This first solution is the most economical. That is, a computer (a laptop or a pc) with a consolidated network card. The requirements for a proper connection are the following:

  • Small distance from the nodal point
  • Clear view contact with the nodal point without any obstructions (plants, cement, iron, etc.)

2nd solution

(It is less economical and there might be signal losses). The second solution is a wireless network card, operating under IEEE 802.11b protocol, supporting a connection with an external antenna. Necessary equipment:

  • An internal (portable) antenna
  • The relative cable which will connect the network card with the antenna. The cable is very thin and its length is 5m, at most.

3rd solution

(An even less economical solution). A wireless network card, operating under IEEE 802.11b protocol, supporting a connection with an external antenna. Necessary equipment:

  • An external antenna, placed on the higher point of a house.
  • A proper cable, connecting the wireless network card with the antenna. The cable is quite thick and it must, in some way, be placed in the house. Its length must not be more than 10m; otherwise there will be signal losses.

4th solution

(This solution is the most expensive but also the most effective). An access point, operating under the IEEE 802.11b protocol, supporting the connection with the external antenna. Necessary equipment:

  • A watertight container, protecting the access point from various weather conditions.
  • An antenna
  • A UTP cable which transmits data from the access point to the computer.
  • An Ethernet, on which the UTP cable is connected.

Optional:

In case you would like to connect more computers with each other, placed in the same building, you could the external access point with an internal one, which will transmit the signal. This possibility though, increases the expenses respectively.
